Twenty-eight athletes were assigned to a protocol emphasising lengthening exercises, L-protocol, and 28 athletes to a protocol consisting of conventional exercises, C-protocol. Exercises specifically addressing strength deficits at greater hamstring lengths have been shown to reduce return to play times (Askling 2013, Askling 2014). The lengthening protocol used in those studies consisted of three exercises: the Extender, Diver, and Glider. The ‘L’ protocol as described by Carl Askling (1) involves three core hamstring lengthening exercises: ‘The Extender’, ‘The Diver’, and ‘The Glider’.

2014-10-14 The strength was tested manually by performing a combined knee flexion and hip extension due to the bi-articular nature of the hamstring muscles. Hamstring strength was also tested in a lengthened state in a supine position with the knee positioned at 15° of flexion while resistance was applied to the heel. 2014-10-12 In this video, David Pope discusses the different protocols studied by Askling et al, demonstrates the various exercises used, and ways of incorporating these into your clinical practice. One of the protocols tested demonstrated a dramatically quicker return to sport and training, and no further hamstring injuries during the rest of the season, even though there is normally high reinjury rates following tears. The Diver (Hamstring Strength and Trunk Stabilisation) From an upright position, bend forward at the hip to 90 degrees whilst standing on the affected leg, and with a knee bend of 10-20 degrees. Extend the uninjured leg backwards as much as possible and hold this position for as long as you can.
